Standing Together Against Loneliness: Every Small Connection Has the Power to Make a Difference

We’ve all felt lonely at some point—whether in a new environment, in the middle of a crowd, or during moments when we simply needed to be heard. Studies show that nearly one in four first-year students frequently experience loneliness. With a new school year beginning and social distance still present in many ways, this number may continue to rise.

Loneliness isn’t always visible. It can hide behind a closed door or behind someone who seems socially active on the surface. That’s why noticing and caring for the people around us is the first step toward supporting one another.

If you’re doing well, here are small things you can do for others:

  • Say hello to someone you don’t know very well — a simple “How are you?” can open a door.

  • Pay attention to roommates who stay in their rooms often; invite them to eat, go for a walk, or watch a movie.

  • Organize a casual gathering in your residence — nothing fancy, just time together.

  • Spend five minutes each day chatting with a classmate or neighbour — small seeds of connection grow over time.

  • Stay open and don’t overlook any act of kindness or conversation.

If you’re the one feeling lonely:

  • Strengthen your support system: Stay in regular contact with family or old friends. Even online conversations can be emotionally nourishing.

  • Build new connections intentionally: Treat making friends as a gradual “project.” Start with one or two groups — classmates, roommates, or club members.

  • Allow yourself to struggle: Loneliness is a common part of university life. You’re not alone. Every attempt you make is an act of courage.

Loneliness doesn’t disappear just because someone says “don’t feel lonely.” But it often softens when someone reaches out, listens with intention, or simply stays by your side. Starting today, let’s be the ones who take that small step forward — whether for ourselves or for others.

You are not alone. Together, we can make a difference.
