Decorating Your Student Accommodation: Dos and Don’ts

What to Avoid

When decorating your student accommodation, certain actions are prohibited, mainly to prevent damage or permanent marks, and to ensure safety. Generally, you should avoid:

  • Hammering nails, pins, or any objects into the walls

  • Sticking hooks or adhesive items on walls or wardrobe surfaces (they may leave marks when removed)

  • Painting walls, ceilings, or furniture

  • Burning candles, incense, or using candle warmers, due to fire hazards

To be safe, always check with us before making any changes. If any damage or marks are left behind, you may be charged for repairs and/or replacement.

That said, you are welcome to add personal decorations as long as they are non-permanent.

Adding Plants

A small plant can instantly make your room feel cozier and more welcoming. Some plants even purify the air, improve mood, and boost productivity.

  • Spider plants are great for air purification and creating a healthier study environment

  • Cacti are low-maintenance and only need watering every few months

  • Peace lilies require minimal light and water, making them both easy to care for and visually appealing

Make the Most of Your Bedding

Your bed can become a cozy centerpiece. Consider buying colorful or warm bedding, which is affordable at local stores and supermarkets.

Add some cushions, a soft throw blanket, or a beloved childhood teddy bear to instantly change the room’s atmosphere.

Lighting for Ambiance

Candles and incense are prohibited due to fire risk, but you can still create a cozy atmosphere with safe lighting options:

  • String lights are inexpensive, versatile, and leave no marks

  • Desk lamps help with studying

  • Soft bedside lamps are perfect for reading in bed without safety hazards

Pleasant Scents

You can also make your room feel like home by using safe aroma diffusers or scented items. Certain scents can relax you, evoke memories, or boost energy.

Use Mirrors to Enhance Space

Mirrors create a sense of space and reflect light, making your room feel brighter and larger.

Personal Touches

Display small items or decorations that remind you of happy memories to make your room more personal.

Add a Rug

A rug is an easy way to add color and comfort without breaking any rules or leaving marks. Thick rugs are comfortable to walk or sit on, and even perfect for reading on the floor.
