Public Transport in Singapore
28 February 2026

Singapore’s public transport system is efficient, well-regulated and widely regarded as one of the most reliable urban transit networks globally.

For international students, understanding how to navigate MRT and bus services will help establish a smooth daily routine for commuting between your Student Accommodation, campus and the city.

MRT (Mass Rapid Transit)

The MRT is the fastest and most convenient way to travel across Singapore. It connects residential areas, educational institutions and commercial districts across the island.

Fare Enquiries

Fare information can be checked via the official fare calculator on the Land Transport Authority (LTA) website or through transport mobile applications.

Travel Etiquette & Regulations

Singapore maintains strict standards of conduct within its public transport system.

Passengers should note the following:

  1. Eating, drinking and smoking are prohibited within MRT stations and train carriages.

Flammable or hazardous materials are not permitted.

  1. Littering is strictly prohibited.
  2. Seats marked “Reserved Seating” are designated for elderly passengers, pregnant individuals and those with mobility needs.
  3. Strong-smelling items, including durians, are not permitted onboard.
  4. When using escalators, stand on the left and allow those in a hurry to pass on the right.
  5. Queue at platform sides and allow alighting passengers to exit before boarding.
  6. Non-compliance may result in financial penalties.
  7. Tap your card both when entering and exiting the station to ensure accurate fare calculation.

Bus Services

Singapore’s bus network provides extensive island-wide coverage and complements the MRT system.

For shorter distances between your accommodation and the nearest MRT station, or for direct routes to certain campus areas, buses can offer convenient alternatives.

Bus and MRT transfers are integrated within the same fare system.

Bus Travel Guidance

  1. Tap your card upon boarding and again before alighting.
  2. Press the “Stop” button in advance when approaching your destination.
  3. Queue in an orderly manner before boarding.
  4. Large luggage is discouraged during peak periods.
  5. Eating, drinking and smoking are not permitted onboard.

Avoid carrying items that may inconvenience other passengers (e.g. strong odors).

If you forget to tap out, approach a Transit Link office for assistance.

Payment Methods

Singapore’s public transport system operates primarily on contactless payment.

1. Contactless Bank Cards

Visa, Mastercard and American Express contactless cards are accepted directly at fare gates and on buses.

2. Stored-Value Transport Cards

You may purchase and top up transport cards such as:

EZ-Link

NETS FlashPay

These cards can be purchased at MRT stations and selected convenience stores.

Initial purchase prices typically include a non-refundable card fee and stored value balance.

3. Cash Payment

Cash payment is available on selected buses; however, no change is provided and fares may be higher. Contactless options are recommended.

Singapore’s public transport system is designed to be safe, punctual and accessible.

Familiarity with its operations will support your daily commute and contribute to a smooth academic experience.
